DECEMBER 23,2009:
"2009 PRE-CHRISTMAS BLUES FEST"
Hello Blues and Southern Soul fans, tis the season to be jolly and I hope and pray that everyone is in a festive frame of mind as the holiday season is upon us.This year was a down year for me as I was only able to attend a few blues and southern soul shows. For those of you who truly know me,realize that my passion for this genre of music is second to none.I enjoy being able to share with you great fans all the enjoyment that I get when I attend these entertaining events.Recently I attended a "PRE-CHRISTMAS BLUES FEST" hosted by Ronnie Perkins Production.
The Washington County Convention Center in Greenville,Mississippi was the venue for this blues and southern soul gathering. It was a very large crowd on hand and they were all ready to get their blues on tonight. The local sound man had the likes of Sir Charles,T.K. Soul,O.B. Buchana and Ms. Jody rocking the house as everyone waited for showtime.I was joined in the Da Dawg Pound by fellow Dawg Pound member,Octavious Pates(O-Dawg) and my very good friend Yulondra Topp(Yo-Yo) who drove all the way from Columbus,Mississippi along with her friend Eric. The lineup for tonight's show included The Love Doctor,Karen Wolfe,Lacee,Omar Cunningham,Shirley Brown and Marvin Sease. There was a special performance by the promoter Ronnie Perkins a.k.a. Rude Boy.There was plenty of Gin,Hennesy and cold Bud light chilling in Da Dawg Pound tonight. So with that being said sit back good people and let me take you on this blues and southern soul ride.
The first performer on the night was Mardi Gras recording artist,The Love Doctor. As he was introduced to the crowd I noticed that there was no band backing him.I've never been a big fan of tracks but this was mostly the theme for tonight's show. The Love Doctor begin his set with "Part Time Love" and I was impressed with his meaty vocals. His next song was the smooth melodic "Soaking Wet Pillow" which has always been one of my favorite southern soul ballads. He really scored big with the crowd as he masterfully delivered on this track. He closed his performance with his signature tune "Slow Roll It" and you know this really got the party started as a few couples in attendance begin to slow roll it southern soul style. The Love Doctor is a former radio personality who crossed over into the recording world.I had the pleasure of meeting him for the very first time backstage and I must say that he is truly a good down to earth person whom I'm looking forward to seeing again in the very near future. For all the latest news on The Love Doctor please visit his myspace page at www.myspace.com/thelovedoctor1194
The next performer on the night was B&J recording artist,Karen Wolfe who also was performing tracks. When I first saw her perform a few years ago she was performing tracks so this wasn't new on me but since she has emerged as a bona fide southern soul diva,I've gotten spoiled by seeing her backed by a band. She did have two male backup singers to accompany her.She opened up her performance with "Backdoor Love Affair" which is also the southern soul hit that established her as an artist. Her next song was the award winning hit "Man Enough" and the crowd simply loved it.She allowed her backup singers to show the ladies in attendance that they were man enough as each one of them did their "lick it and stick it" dance routine. She closed her performance with Jazmine Sullivan's r&b hit "Bust Your Windows".Karen Wolfe is truly a southern soul diva on the rise.I'm so glad to see her getting all the much deserved recognition that has come her way recently. For more information and all the latest news about this talented diva please visit her webpage at www.karenwolfemusic.com and her myspace page at www.myspace.com/mskarenwolfe
The next performer was Advantage recording artist,Lacee. It has been a couple of years since I last saw her perform so I was truly looking forward to this performance. She also was performing with tracks. She received a big ovation especially from the guys in attendance when she walked out on stage. This woman was looking oh so sexy.I got to go country and say she was thicker than a snicker and my man Eric said he wish he could satisfy her.She opened her performance with Cherly Lynn's "Got To Be Real" and the crowd jumped to their feet.A 70's disco hit was now moving the crowd. Her next song was a rendition of Aretha Franklin's "Dr. Feelgood" and man did she do the Queen Of Soul justice on this one.She reached way down and belted out a sultry,gut-wrenching performance. This diva brought me to my feet with this performance,it felt like we were in church. Her next song was "I Ran A Good Man Away" but I couldn't tell as several men had now posted down stage. Her next song was "Lacee's Groove" and she said she was feeling good. She asked one of the guys in attendance to come and unstrap her boots so she can really get her groove on.The guy could barely unstrap them as he was mesmerized by this sexy diva. She closed her performance with a superb renditon of Color Me Badd's,r&b smash hit "Sex You Up" which appears on her latest cd.Lacee has always been one of my favorite female southern soul divas and I hate I don't get to see her perform more often. With this latest project hopefully the promoters will begin to put her on more shows. She is very loyal to her fans so for all of you who want to show her some love please visit her myspace page at www.myspace.com/154513691
The next performer was Soul1st recording artist,Omar Cunningham. He received a thunderous ovation as he hit the stage and the females all rushed to get closer to the man whom I've dubbed "The best live vocals in the industry".He was also performing tracks but with Omar it just doesn't matter.Hell I believe the man can sing underwater and still sound good.He opened his performance with "Married Woman,Married Man" and the real dance party begin as everyone was up and dancing to this southern soul hit.He made the women melt with "Sweet,Sweet" which is also one of my personal favorites.I've always felt this song should have been played on mainstream radio and his face appearing on BET,MTV and VH1.He brought the house down with his next song "The Beauty Shop".The women showed him so much love as he told the story about a woman putting her business in the street. He gave us a sample of his classic hit "Check To Check" and he closed his performance with a holiday theme with a rendition of The Emotions Christmas hit,"What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas". Omar Cunningham's body of work speaks for itself. He is one of the top performers in the industry and did I mention that he has THE BEST LIVE VOCALS IN THE INDUSTRY.To get all the latest Omar Cunnigham music, upcoming shows and other news please visit his myspace pages at www.myspace.com/omarcham and www.myspace.com/omarcunninghammusic1
There was a special performance by Ronnie Perkins.I wasn't familar with him at all but I can say that he did give the crowd a good show.He performed a medley of r&b hits including Michael Jackson's thriller. He also had some of the best stage props I've ever seen at a show.He performed some of his songs,"Swingout","Zydeco Train","Crazy Love" and "Singing Ding Ling".I wish I were more familar with him.You can checkout more information on him at www.RyanRecords.com
The next artist was THE DIVA ,Shirley Brown. All the other artist were using tracks but Shirley Brown was not having that. She hit the stage with her band on hand.I guess when you have reached legendary status you can dictate your performance and to be honest I'm glad she had her band, because a live band in a packed venue is definetly a better performance..She opened her set with "Sleep With One Eye Open" and the packed house was feeling this cut for real, especially the ladies at a table on the side of me as they were all singing their hearts out.Her next song was "Too Much Candy" and it now seems the entire crowd was now singing along with this legendary diva."Joy And Pain" was her next song and it is also one of my personal favorites. She closed her performance with her classic hit "Woman To Woman" and she received a standing ovation as she exited the stage.I want to extend my thanks to her as she took a few moments to talk with me and she even took a picture with me(she doesn't take photos anymore). She is and will always be "THE DIVA OF SOUTHERN SOUL BLUES".
The last performer on this night was The Marvelous Marvin Sease. It was late but to my suprise the house was still packed.I have been a big fan of his for many years. He opened the show with "Clean Up,What I Messed Up".The fans gave him a nice ovation. He begin to do his testimony and I don't know if this is something he actually experienced but it is a fixture in all of his performances. He did a limited number of songs probably because of the time(it was about 2:00 am)."Sit Down On It","Motel Lover","Do It Tonight" and "Please Take Me" got the biggest ovations. He closed the show with the song that shot him to superstardom ,"Candylicker".I always enjoy seeing him perform this song. The females flocked around the stage as he displayed his motor to the young ladies. Its amazing how after all these years the women still get a thrill when perform this song.I was glad to see that he was looking better physically. The last few times I saw him perform I thought that he was starting to decline in health.I hope that he is doing fine and that I will have the opportunity to see him perform for a long time. For all the latest news on this living legend please checkout his myspace page at www.myspace.com/candylicker0000
In closing I would like to thank The Love Doctor,Omar Cunningham,Karen Wolfe,Lacee,Shirley Brown and Marvin Sease for taking the time to meet, greet, converse and allowing me the opportunity to provide you fans with some terrific photos from this show.I am very appreciative to all of you.I want to give shout outs to Anna Coday,Cyerio Hughes,Big Jock and Ronnie Perkins.Much love to my girl Yulondra,Yo-Yo it was so nice to get my blues on with you again.Words can't describe how much fun I had with you and Eric who is now the newest addition to Da Dawg Pound.O-Dawg you have been with me every step on this 2009 blues and southern soul ride.I can't wait to do the damn thang with you again.I had a great time at this show and I just wanted to share it with the greatest fans in the world.Take care and MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS.I'll see you down by the stage.
